The Black Traveler Series: Meet Michelle

The Black Traveler Series: Meet Michelle

When I created YoungBlackandAbroad, I originally thought I would use my platform as a way to document my study abroad trip and share my personal travel experiences. As I began creating social media sites for my blog, I realized how many other black people were also abroad and I became curious about their experiences. I started The Black Traveler Series to document the journeys of black travelers all around the world. These are their stories; these are their experiences. Meet Michelle. Michelle has been...Read More

Week Three in Santander: Feb 12-18

Soooo I've been in Santander now for three (3!!!) weeks. That's so crazy and unreal to me. I've become really familiar with the city and know how to get almost anywhere now without getting lost. I feel like this city is my "home"--I no longer feel like I'm just here visiting. I can also feel myself getting better at Spanish. And I've become a regular at a cafe here and successfully completed class 1 of 5 so life is good if you ask me....Read More
Day Trip to Bilbao

Day Trip to Bilbao

The moment we stepped off the bus, I knew I was going to love Bilbao. Bilbao is about an hour away from Santander (where I'm living) by bus. It's in the Basque Country, an autonomous community of Spain, and it is absolutely beautiful. The architecture, the bridges, the Guggenheim, everything. I am obsessed! Me and three of my friends left for Bilbao at 9am via bus and got there at 10:30am. The bus ride was absolutely beautiful. I will never get over how gorgeous...Read More

Week Two in Santander: February 5-11

Santander, Week Two  I can't believe I've been living here for two weeks now. It still doesn't feel real. I still can't believe that I'm actually here and this is my life. Week two started my first week of classes at the University of Cantabria. Right now, I am taking a grammar class and a conversation/culture class, both of which are foundations for the classes I'll be taking for the rest of the semester. They aren't hard at all and I love that the...Read More
Carnaval in Santoña

Carnaval in Santoña

Carnaval (noun): Carnaval is the traditional period of fun, feasting and partying that precedes the start of Lent. Today, a group of us traveled to a town about an hour from here named Santoña to celebrate Carnaval. We were told it was the BEST city to experience Carnaval in and that today was the big day of the celebration (Carnaval has been going on for a week and will continue on for one more). So, we bought costumes (I dressed up as a 'pirate' but it...Read More

Week One in Santander: January 29-February 4

Monday, January 29 Today was my first day going to the university. We walked around and got a small tour and took a placement test. Later on, we had another tour of downtown Santander where we were able to see the bus station, the post office, and more. We were also rewarded with a beautiful view/sunset of all of Santander after walking what seemed like forever. There's so much walking but the view is always worth it. After the tour, a professor/director of the...Read More
My First Adventure: Faro de Cabo Mayor

My First Adventure: Faro de Cabo Mayor

Today I had my first adventure here in Santander. Visiting the Faro de Cabo Mayor and walking along the coast line back to where I will be living. It was beautiful but more on that later. The day began in a panic. The Faro de Cabo Mayor is a 1 hour walk from me. I could've taken the bus but it's Sunday and there is no place open to get a bus card. Also it's my first real day here and I don't know...Read More
Day One and Two(?): Arriving In Santander

Day One and Two(?): Arriving In Santander

On January 26 at 8am, the longest two days of my life began. I woke up, brushed my teeth, got dressed, and checked all my suitcases one last time to make sure I had everything because if I didn't, I was just going to have to go without for 3 months. My mom and dad then drove me to dollar general for tape/paper clips (must have for my travel journal) and Biscuitville. After having what would be our last meal together for 3 months,...Read More
